Omega-3 PUFA and Eye Health Some of the latest research also indicates that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are also associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In general, PUFAs are present in high concentrations in the retina of the human eye, which implies this is one place where they are most needed by the body. Studies show that these fatty acids may optimize the eye's functions of bringing and using light in the retina (phototransduction). PUFAs also support the important use of vitamin A for eyesight, known as retinoid transport. In particular, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is the most abundant fatty acid seen in the eye, but since this is an essential fatty acid, it must be obtained from the diet. The primary food source of DHA is seafood, especially coldwater fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna. |
